Elegant, graceful, and unusual wedding kimono (uchikake) of white silk with a crepe texture, and a lovely design of white and silver embroidered cranes on painted and embroidered large-scale pine trees (representing longevity and virtue), all accented with gold leafing. Soft and beautiful whether you’re wearing it, displaying it on the wall, or cutting it up for pillows, quilts, or totes. Unlike our other kimono, the lining on this one is rayon, not silk, and a beautiful silver cloth that is quite soft. Basting stitches are still in, showing that it was cleaned after the last time it was worn.
There are some spots (some of which are visible in the last 3 photos – the last photo shows one of the spots in the lining), and some subtle discoloration from age, but overall I would consider this piece in good condition and ready to wear as is. To me this is the difference between buying a pristine new kimono, and a vintage piece with its own history.
Very approximate dimensions:
Sleeve hang length is 42”, kimono is 50” wide from wrist to wrist, and is 62“ long from shoulder to hem, width of the back is 24”.
Size differences in kimono are minimal, and are actually one-size-fits-all garments that fit an American size 2-12. Kimono are surprisingly long because they were cut so that Japanese women could pull them up at the waist to the precise length needed, and bind them in place with an obi.
There are many non-traditional ways for Westerners to wear kimono. They can be bloused and worn with a chain belt or sash. They can be worn open, as dusters or luxurious evening coats. Some pieces can be shortened if desired, depending upon their design. If you wish to learn how to wear kimono in the traditional way, please see The Book of Kimono, by Noria Yamanaka for complete instructions.
